We are all leaders. Leadership is about influence. Leadership begins with the self and a valuable component of strong leadership is love. We specialize in leading ourselves and make choices to positively influence our present and future. To love anyone else we need to start with loving ourselves and to lead anyone else we need to begin by leading ourselves.

This challenge is bigger than first perceived and many people fail to make it past the starting gate because of initial poor choices that lead to social debt. Playing catch up mode in life prevents compounding growth of success from happening, but success is not unreachable if we start pushing the 200 ton bus today. The goal is to have something to show for life when it is all said and done.

Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is an important theory that outlines the progression of successful development. Briefly, we need basic needs such as food and water, and will strive to satisfy these needs at any cost. Poverty creates violence and we would all become animalistic if cast to the lower level of the hierarchy. Safety needs are next followed by the need to be liked by others or some would call it the need for love. This is the level most of us attempt to fulfill and fall short because of choices or faulty intentions.

Strong leadership ability depends on satisfying this need and this need is fulfilled initially by loving ourselves. The following two levels are where history takes place and greatness is achieved. The need to be respected by others and the need to be accomplished are the fuel of higher level goals. When Rocky reaches the top step we all feel his energy and identify with his determination because it is human nature to want to reach that top step. Leadership starts within us and providing others with positive influence is a priceless gift that transfers throughout generations. Once inner leadership is accomplished then greater leadership challenges exist.

The main prerequisite for organizational leadership is for the aspiring individual to be motivated to be a leader. A lack of motivation to handle the enormous task of leadership will certainly end in failure. The second prerequisite for leadership is for the leader to have followers. Without followers there is no leadership. Leadership is relational – Leadership is psychological – Leadership leverages power appropriately – Leadership is an ART. Effective leadership greatly improves all business processes at all levels. Strong leadership provides product differentiation.

Servant leadership builds trust within the organization. Today’s leadership requirement has turned the hierarchical pyramid upside down. Influence, providing vision, fulfilling needs for acknowledgement, and creating meaningful work for employees is mandatory of current successful leadership. The pay differential for leaders vs. mid-level employees is vast and these higher salaries create higher expectations. Technology has created a world where work never stops and providing leadership around the ever-changing organizational variables is integral.

Organizational leadership has changed forever and soft skills such as relationship building, collaboration, and change management are the key metrics for producing success. This statement is uncomfortable for most organizational leaders because it clashes with their leadership experience. The previous statement is not a blanket statement for the leadership of yesterday, but rather, a harbinger of the leadership of our current future. Soft skills leadership will provide a competitive advantage and competing companies will rush to leverage the art of true leadership. As the environment changes so do leadership practices in order to be financially solvent. The ultimate goal of all business is to make a profit which starts and ends with successful leadership and all successful leadership starts and ends with the inner self.

If you’re reading this article, you’re probably someone responsible for delivering an effective and value-enhancing leadership training programme within your organisation.

Given that employee turnover can be quite high in the modern age, there is the very real risk that you star employees may undergo expensive leadership training and actually leave the company within the next year, with a padded CV ready for their next big opportunity. This has led for leadership training courses in the 21st century to really deliver on value-for-money, as the company will want to ensure that leadership training is a profit-enhancing actvity even if turnover of senior mangers approaches for instance, 25%.

In my opinion, the problem of employee turnover in the 21st century also presents an opportunity to really change the nature of leadership training, and structure in specific and principled approaches designed to retain the best talent, even years after the 5 day course has been completed.

What measures could be taken to increase retention you ask? Well, for starters – a key part of the training must be for the participant to see for themselves their future within the company. Teaching somebody simple leadership skills such as oratory, PR, time management, leadership theory and strategy will only arm them with knowledge and skills, and will not inherently attract that employee to your organisation, above and beyond the loyalty that delivering such a scheme would produce.

Therefore, stop arming your employees with just skills and start arming them with a dream, arm them with a goal, a specific future that they wsh to create for themselves, and that the course can help clarify and help deliver.

An example of this at its most simplest would be a course with a built in module about career advancement within a company. With largest multinationals, this topic can be very complicated, and many employees would benefit from knowing in detail what their opportunities are. If there are opportunities for working abroad, do you employees know about this? If a senior manager could possibily second over to a different department such as marketing for a few weeks, did they know that all it took was a phonecall to the right person and this ball could start rolling?

To take this a stage further, for very senior employees, e.g. senior manager below the board, and board members themselves. It may be worth discussing with their superior on an indvidual basis before the course begins such that you know the specific goals that they may be able to achieve. For instance, their boss or counsellor may be able to tell you that they wish to achieve the CEO role within 5 years, and therefore you will be able to help them structure their activities and annual planning to facilitate being able to do that.

With this sort of focus, leadership training can be as much as career planning as it is about public speaking. This type of leadership training will not only inspire and arm the employees but will also give a great vision of how they can apply those skills to help your companies bottom line in the future.

Many times people are not being heard because they speak too softly. There is another group, however, who are not being heard because they are not speaking distinctly and clearly. They are known as the mumblers. If you are being asked to repeat yourself because your words are not being understood, then you should do something to stop your lazy lip syndrome.

From my experience, I have found that mumbling is much more common among men than among women. [Ladies, I am not letting you off the hook. Women who are not speaking clearly are often plagued with lockjaw which results from tension in the neck and shoulder regions and a tight jaw your lips are moving but your mouth is going nowhere!]

The best exercise for curing mumbling is simple and most effective. Place the knuckle of your index finger in your mouth and say the following nursery rhyme. (Yes, you will sound and feel ridiculous so do this when you are alone!)

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the kings horses, And all the kings men,

Couldnt put Humpty together again.

Now say the nursery rhyme again without your knuckle in your mouth. You should notice an amazing difference in how you say it the 2nd time. Practice this exercise several times every day, saying it first with your knuckle and immediately following without. Train your inner ear to listen more closely to yourself when you are speaking. It is this awareness that will make the change in your speech a habit.

If you speech is marred due to mumbling, your message is not being heard. In addition, there are only so many times your listener will ask you to repeat yourself before he/she will take over the conversation. If you expect others to listen, why not give them something they can understand the 1st time you say it!

Work Through Your Fears Of Public Speaking

Fear of speaking in front of a crowd is the thing most feared by peoplegreater than snakes, spiders or being shot at! The very idea of standing up in front of a room full of people leaves most of us speechless.

Before I conducted my first workshop I went to the bathroom and threw up. However, there are ways to allay those fears. With practice you can even become confident and relaxed at public speaking. The following activities will help you gain the confidence you need to speak in public. Practice, practice, practice. Public speaking gets easier every time you do it. Each opportunity helps build your confidence. Thats why we encourage children to become involved in public speaking from an early age. Know what you are going to say. Have brief notes just to remind you. Choose topics you know something about. Research your topic so you feel confident that you know what you are saying. Being prepared will cut nervousness in half! Dont over-complicate the activity. If you try to make your speech too involved, you will lose yourself and your audience. Keep it short and sweet. If your topic is very wide e.g., gardening, shorten it to a specific focus: e.g., growing tomatoes in patio planters. Find an audience: your mirror, your parents, your kids, the neighbors, colleagues at work. Use notes but dont memorize. You dont want to sound like a recording. You want your speech to be natural. You need to show your audience that you are interested and enthusiastic about your topic. Try videotaping yourself and looking at the tape. Do you look and sound natural? Try to relax and infuse a little humor into your speech. This will relax both you and your audience. Its okay to say, Boy, am I nervous. There are so many of you and you all look so serious. If you make a mistake, admit it and laugh about it. Your audience will relax and laugh with you. Your audience wants you to do well! Be positive. You are going to survive this experience. You are prepared. You have interesting things to share with the audience. They are going to love you! Public speaking is the number one fear of people but it need not be.
